Today was the first day of the Seniors European Championships in Cheb, Czech Republic. The competition is played on Eternit and Beton and low scores was expected on especially the Beton course.
It was decided to play 4 rounds the first day due to forecasts of worse weather later in the week. The rain has also been constantly appearing from time to time during the training days.
As so many times before the Germans started of in great style. Especially in the ladies category where the 4 German ladies actually holds the 1, 2, 3 and 5 positions individually with the German star player Gaby Rahmlow in the lead with 97 strokes.
The German ladies are already 20 strokes ahead of the second team Italy. On third place we find Czech republic another 3 strokes behind. In fourth position are the Swiss ladies another five strokes behind. Most likely the medals will be within these 4 teams and most likely the Gold are already in the hands of Germany.
In the men’s team category we also find Germany in the lead. Here it’s not at all decided though since the home favorites from Czech Republic are only 6 strokes behind. And Austria is just another 3 strokes behind. These three teams seems to be on a higher level than the rest but maybe the Swiss Team in fourth position want to have a something to say about to whom the medals shall be delivered.
Individually there has been some really low scores like a 22 on Beton by the German closing man Karl-Heinz Gerwert but on top for today is the ever furious Francesco Leuci of Italy. Just like last year in Portugal he is playing astonishing Beton play. It will be interesting to follow him also in the Predazzo Championship in two weeks time. Leuci has 93 strokes today and is followed closest by home player Bohumil Pokorny and last year’s Champion from Switzerland Reinhard Zengaffinen. Also Karl-Heinz Gerwert, Germany, Petr Vlcek, Czech Republic and Morgan Munther of Sweden landed on 94 after today play. Vlcek and Munther sadly for their Teams though play as substitutes.
But the scores are tight and you find 21 men under 100 and the last qualifying position to Saturday in 32 place is actually on 103 points.
More action can be followed online tomorrow.
