EMF tries two Champions already in 2011

Europe 26 Jan 2011 at 11:57 | Published by: Hans | Views: 10663 | News search

EMF tries two Champions already in 2011 The EMF Board has published their minutes from the Board meeting held the 20-21st November last year in Berlin. In this protocol some interesting decision was made.

Maybe most interesting is the statement about that a Modus with two Champions shall be tested already in 2011 on the SEC in Kunzell, Germany. The idea is to decrease the number of team rounds to two days and play an individual stroke play champions on Friday. Then a KO-final is played on Saturday.

EMF also opposes the WMF directions on using the BA-software for International Championships. In the protocol is says that the BA software shall not be mandatory on EMF organized competitions and instead the software used can be decided by the Sport Director of EMF.

From the protocol it's also stated that the 2012 European Championships organizers in Porto seems to have second thoughts about arranging the Nations Cup the same year. They are asking EMF for permissions to arrange another international tournament like the one held in Predazzo last year.

If you take a look at our "big brother" golf, where the original essence of the game also is to have the lowest amount of strokes at the end of the competition, they also have a separate matchplay (world)championship. Maybe they don't have an official strokeplay champion, but they were smart enough to organize is as a seperate championship and not in combination with other strokeplay titles.

Perhaps we should do the same in minigolf?

Get rid of the Nations Cup (which is cancelled already for many times) and organize a Matchplay championship that weekend, world or european championships. For example let nations send a maxmimum of 5 players in men's categorie and a max. of three in ladies categorie. You can play on 1 system, 5 preliminary rounds and on second day the matchplayrounds. Or maybe better.. make a draw were some players have profit of a high ranking on the world ranking list. This world ranking list is published, but what is the use of this list at the moment..? I can't think of one right now.

You have an extra championship with problaby a faster playing modus. And the tournament in august can be used for strokeplay team and individual titles. It also gives a extra oppurtunity for good media attention.

This is just a little idea, which came up my mind reading this article and some reactions.

I think the problem was to ever quit the stroke play modus, by far the best way to find a champion. This decision is acknowledging the error without saying it, and making international tournaments more confusing for outsiders.

I like the idea of making the team competition shorter. It can offer smaller gaps between teams, that means bigger emotions.
It is also good to give more space to the individual event. We should not forget that minigolf is principally an individual sport and actually we have 3 days for the team title and 1 day for the individual title.
What I don't like too much is the double individual title. I don't see any reason to give two titles because there's no "technical" difference in playing "strokeplay" or "matchplay". This is not like alpine skiing, where you have 4 different disciplines or cross country skiing, where you have two very different skiing techniques. It is always minigolf, played on the same course, with the same putter and balls, and with the same goal of reaching the hole in the lowest stroke amount possible.

i agree with JJM. and look to other kind of sports. there are not so much teamcompetitions on more than 1 day. so we have to look forward, we have to have no fear of changing modus and try to get more attractive to look at. i know there are current not really many, sometimey ANY spectators. but so we have 4 days of competition, and 3 days of them with ( hopefully ) thrilling final rounds and decisions!

The team competition has been the most boring part of the tournaments to watch, because in most years the score differences have been big and all medals practically decided (in men) before the final round. Two rounds less team competition means smaller score differences between teams, it should make the final round a bit more thrilling.

its about time for what?? less team play when many of the players play the WC/EC because of the team competition?

agree with John that that is a good thing. a even better thing would be to have it like old time tiwh stroke-play, OR like nowdays with KO, not both..

Excellent that the team competition ends before the final round of individual strokeplay.
