Miniature Golf and Bettering the Community - Part 5

Miniature Golf and Bettering the Community - Part 5
Picture from Salisbury-Rowan Senior Games  (Photo by Jon C. Lakely - Salisbury Post)

We're once again taking an opportunity to look at some of the unique ways miniature golf has an impact on our communities beyond just being a way to bring people together on a date night. In this article we'll highlight some different uses from being part of a seniors' competition to more ways to raise funds for charity to bridging relationship gaps in the community. You can visit Part 4 of this series to look at some of the events we've covered with respect to raising funds for charity.

The first story is from a seniors game minigolf competition out of South Carolina, USA. The
Salisbury-Rowan Senior Games featured a 36 hole miniature golf competition at Dan Nicholas Park. We've noticed that miniature golf is a part of a lot of seniors' games activities (as evidenced by our next article too) and it's great to see the sport highlighted as something that can keep people active throughout their life. While the article was rather short the best part was seeing some of the age brackets that played including a 90+ category! In addition, the overall scores weren't bad for an American style adventure course, with 91 being the low for the tournament. It shows that miniature golf is a sport for all ages!

Sticking on the seniors' game circuit, we have another article about the
Bremerton’s West Sound Senior Games in Washington (state), USA. There's quite a few pictures and a video in this article which help to further showcase the sport as keeping people active and having fun while playing.

We head back to the American South to North Carolina, USA for our next article. The temporary miniature golf course at
Ole Shakey's combined a variety of items we've discussed before: food, drink and charity. Each of the nine holes featured in this temporary course was developed by a different brewery. Each week for nine weeks one of those breweries sponsored a party where the money from the first keg, play of the course and some food went to an assigned charity. This is a great way to expand on what is usually a one-time event for fundraising and to make sure patrons have a reason to come back to the bar week after week.

Our last article is from last summer but it illustrates a way that miniature golf is helping to enhance (or repair) community bonds. The
Putt Putt with Police event in Virginia, USA was put together by the Albemarle County Police Department. Folks could come play a free round of miniature golf with officers as a way to spark conversations between the public and police force and develop a collaborative, instead of confrontational, relationship. With an event that allows them to also target youngsters, the department hopes to break down some of the stigmas that can form at an earlier age.

Keep watching our page for more articles as we love to showcase the everyday aspect of our sport. If you know of any great community events involving minigolf in your country, reach out to patsheridan@minigolfnews.com.
