Continuing our re-post of the youth interviews from the WMF Youth Facebook page, we have an interview with Sarah Schumacher out of Germany. She was a winner on the female side in last year's stroke-play at the YEC. In case you missed the first in the series, you can catch it here. The following interview can also be found here.

Club: 1. MGC Tuttlingen
Birth year: 1999

Q1: How and when did you start to play Minigolf?

SS: I started playing Minigolf when I was a little kid. I don’t remember exactly but I think I was 7 or 8 years old. My dad also played Minigolf since he was little. When he went to competitions, my parents took me with them very often where my mum and I supported him. So, I have been surrounded by Minigolf my whole life. Then when I became older I got an own club and started to play Minigolf.

Q2: What club do you use when you play and what is your favourite ball?

SS: I use the old club of my dad, it’s a Benny. Even if it is a little bit older I really like to play with this club. It is funny because I have a favourite ball but I don’t know what kind it is and nobody else either. I always play this ball on the middle hill, as you can see it is a simple ball.

Q3: What surface do you prefer the most? Follow-up question: Do you have a personal best (PB) that you are particularly proud of?

SS: Oh, that’s hard to say. But in Kloten, Switzerland I really liked this course and its concrete surface.

Q4: Have you ever had a role model you looked up to during your early years? Maybe this person still is an inspiration for you today?

SS: I think my father was and is my role model in the minigolfsport. He supported me so much! He never gave up on me even I was crying every tournament at the beginning, because I was so bad and lost every time. Soon I got better and set myself a challenge and it was to play better than him. Sure, sometimes we have discussions, but I think that's totally normal between father and daughter.

Q5: What is your biggest merit within Minigolf? (Doesn’t need to be related to competition)

SS: Getting to know people from other countries, making new friends and seeing a lot of different places is my biggest merit. But there are a lot more.

Q6: What is your best/strongest memory from your years being a youth player?

SS: The best memory is when I got pick the first time for the youth world championships in Lachti 2014. It was such an amazing experience to be a part of the German Youth National team. On the other hand, I was so nervous at the first day of the competition, I never felt like this before. It was my first tournament in this magnitude, also it was on a felt course, what I’ve never played that much on before. First, I thought I was just a substitute player but than I was allowed to play in the team which was such a nice surprise for me. And it couldn’t get better for me until we even won the team category. It made me really proud.

Last Question: What is it about Minigolf that makes it so special?

SS: Minigolf is not like other sports, it is not really physically demanding. It is more mentally challenging and I think that’s what I like about Minigolf. When you play the competitions, there are so many emotions. Everywhere you hear shouts of joy, you are pushing your teammates and that’s what makes it an amazing feeling. Of course, not always it works perfect, you always have to stay mentally strong and never give up. When you play a competition over 2-3 days with 4 rounds every day it is obviously a challenge to stay concentrated all the time. Another point what makes it special is the preparation for a competition. Most of sports you can practice everywhere, for example a soccer field is almost identical everywhere. But when you want to get prepared for a Minigolf competition you need to go where the competition takes place. Every course is different, so you need to go there and practice on the spot. Sure, to practice the technique and to keep in shape you don’t have to go to different courses, but for a competition you have to do so if you want to play good. That’s a big plus. That way you get the chance to visit a lot of random places and for sure you don’t have to practice all the time, and do a little sightseeing in between.
