Shhh...Library Minigolf Part 5

Shhh...Library Minigolf Part 5
Ellington, CT Library Event 2019  (Photo by The Putting Penguin)

In Part 4 of this series, we continued our look at how miniature golf has been positively impacting people's relationship with their local libraries and helping to raise funds to keep them in order. With winter being in full sprint in the United States, we see that trend continuing very strongly in libraries across the country and all of the stories we are highlighting below are from the United States.

We start first with an event that we attended in Ellington, Connecticut in early February. The event was held at
Hall Memorial Library and has continued to grow since it's inception. This is the 3rd year we have stopped by and just like in the past the stacks were packed with putters. They key to this course's success is definitely the buy-in from local businesses. The course had an incredible 25 holes, almost all of which were designed by local business who were also there to support the event. A plumbing company had an incredible lengthy hole that had you going through pipes (and ending in a toilet) and a local bank was giving away piggy banks for aces (which our editor almost did one handed). The highlight, however, was the amazing hole that was created to go down the stairs between the two levels as you can see in this video. Not only was the design superb but the fact that it was mirrored on both sides of the stairs was cool! The last update from the library was the event raised over $11,000 (~9,700 EUR).

0 We head next door to Massachusetts for our next article. At
Jones Library, partnership with business was also the key to their success as they decided to hold their first library minigolf event after seeing the success of others in the area. We'd say their event was a success as well, with 350 players coming out for this inaugural event and also raising $11,000 (~9,700 EUR) in funds for the library. Their course was 18 holes and also featured a staircase hole (though no word on how elaborate that one was).

Success breeds success as this next short article highlights, returning to Connecticut this time and
Harry Bennett Branch of the Ferguson Library in Stamford. Emboldened by other libraries in Connecticut and the success they had with minigolf, this library threw their hat into the ring and were happy for it as they had over 500 people attend their first event, although no word on how much money was raised.

It's also never too late to return to a minigolf idea. After a couple years off, the
Waynesboro Library in Virginia brought back miniature golf, developing their own course in the stacks. While there's no comment on money raised, the article does make it seem like it was a success for the library.

We stay in Virginia for our last article in this part and it is a combination of library minigolf within an educational setting (not that libraries themselves aren't educational). At
Brookeville Middle School a very detailed course was set up in the school library for students who met their reading goals to play as a reward. Over 150 students met the stated reading goals that covered an 8 week period and they got to putt through the library alongside their principals and some local police. The video has some more information about the event and also some great shots of the elaborate holes that were constructed. There's always great creativity on display when folks get to build their own lanes!

If you have any information about a great event held at a local library, please send it along to patsheridan@minigolfnews.com.
