Liepaja – For four days in August (7-10) the best youth miniature golfers descended on Lativa and put on a clinic of how to conquer a miniature golf course during the Youth European Championships (YEC). Low scores were flying around the course, including six perfect-18s in the stroke play competitions. In total there were 7 divisions up for grabs – Male/Female individual, Male/Female team, Male/Female individual match play and Mixed Doubles. In total, 79 participants from 11 countries battled it out on the miniaturegolf lanes.

The big winner of the tournament week was Jennifer Göransson of Sweden, who at 18 had a holey moley of a performance and recorded a historical four gold medals in the YEC. For 10 rounds she shot an impressive 205, only one off the overall low score for the tournament set by Silvio Krauss of Germany, which was enough to secure her the top spot in the Female Youth category. Her final round of 19 in the team competition was also enough for her Team Sweden to squeak past the German ladies by two strokes to secure gold in that category. Her scores through 8 rounds with teammate Alexander Njord were enough to earn them the top qualifying spot in the mixed pairs competition as well. With only two rounds in the mixed pairs finals (and resetting the scores for just those groups), it was bound to be close and it was with only 5 strokes separating first and tenth places. However, it was Göransson/Njord who came out victorious with a two round score of 40, sealing her third medal of the week. Last on the docket was the Female Youth matchplay competition. Göransson made to the semi-finals with little trouble. The drama started in the semis where she snuck past Melanie Jurgeleit (Germany) 4-3, coming back from down 1-3 with only 4 lanes to play, sealing it on the 18th. The nail biting continued in the finals, which saw her matched against Elena Sukonnikova of Russia, the silver medalist in the strokeplay competition. Göransson held a slight lead of 1-0 going into the final lane but slipped ever so much and recorded a 2, opening the door for Sukonnikova to get the ace and force a sudden death playoff . After trading aces on the first two sudden death lanes, Göransson led off the 3rd lane with an ace, which Sukonnikova was unable to match, giving Göransson her fourth gold of the week.

On the Male Youth side, the stroke play competition was fierce coming down to some solid play over the final round. Daniel Brtevnik of the Czech Republic put the pressure on Silvio Krauss of Germany after the ninth round, cutting Krauss’s lead to only a stroke. Krauss, who shot one of the perfect 18 rounds earlier in the competition, wouldn’t succumb to the pressure however, as he recorded his third 19 of the tournament and secured the gold medal by 3 strokes. The excitement didn’t stop in this division as the bronze medal would go down to a playoff between Kenny Marc Schmeckenbecher (Germany) and Alexander Njord (Sweden). The
sudden death playoff saw aces by both players through three and then Schmeckenbecher wrapped it up on the fourth lane with a lead off ace, where Njord just lipped out. The solid play of Krauss and Schmeckenbecher, who also recorded an 18 in the tournament, helped lead Germany to the team gold medal in the Male category. They were far from the only stars on Germany, however, as the six person team has two rounds (five and eight) where they combined averaged under 20 for the round, an amazing accomplishment. In matchplay, Brtevnik would get his redemption as he steamrolled through most of his competition, beating Ryan Giroldini (Italy) in the final with 5-2, who shocked the field in the quarterfinals when he took down Lauro Klöckener from Germany 4-0 and continued his role through the semi-finals beating Jonathan Lindoff of Sweden.

The World Minigolf Sport Federatgion (WMF) would like to give a huge thanks to the Head of the organizing committee, Verners Kiršs, for making this YEC 2019 in Liepāja possible.

The World Minigolf Sport Federation (WMF) is the umbrella organization of 63 Minigolf sports associations worldwide with Continental Associations in Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Over 1,000 championships courses are approved for official competitions and over 1,500 international minigolf tournaments are held each year.
