72 year old Arn Quakkelaar wins Prairieville Park Open

United States of America 26 Jul 2009 at 08:10 | Published by: Blondie | Views: 10421 | News search

72 year old Arn Quakkelaar wins Prairieville Park Open 5th Annual Prairieville Park Open in the absence of reigning champion Astra Miglane Stanwyck was loaded with surprises. The very difficult par 50 course tournament format is very interesting - after 1st round only top 12 continue in second round and only top six players go into championship round three.

Tournament favorites were US Open winner Kevin Lacey and 5th place winner at US Open Nate Nichols. Milwaukee player Joel Blanker spends a lot of time in practice to try this year win Astra and he was one of potential contenders for top three spots. Not much was expected of Tyler Bauman who came to the course yesterday for fun, had few rounds and decided to take his chance at the tournament (Tyler is former Iowa University Golf Team member).

After first two rounds locals Joel Blanker and Tyler Bauman were in the lead for 1st place with total score for two rounds -90. Tracy Opper presented incredible game despite the fact that she is only month away from giving birth to their first child. Tracy tied for 3rd and 4th place with Kevin Lacey with two round total of 94. Arn Quakkelaar was tied with George McLeod for fifth and 6th place with 97 points. Nate Nichols dropped out of the game after two rounds placing 8th with total of 102 points.

During the 3rd round local player Arn Quakkelaar played solid game and finish the round with 45 points (total score 142)to take home 1000 dollar prize money which he is planning to donate to Basics in Milwaukee for scholarship funds for less fortunate children. Despite of Joel Blanker’s solid game first two rounds, Joel mentally fell apart on hole 18 in the last round earning 4 points (total score 144)and letting Tyler and Kevin decide who will take silver and bronze.

Tyler finished round with 53 points, Kevin had 49 points and both of them (total score 143)had to go into three hole replay followed by sudden death play in the case of tie. Replay started on hole #8- three level monster. Tyler’s not so great choice of line let Kevin take the lead (4-3). Hole #9 both players two putted. Hole #10 was sore spot for Kevin all day long and replay wasn’t different and both players were tied again.

Hole #11 was start place for sudden death play. Both players made very identical first puts but more experienced Kevin Lacey made the second while Tyler miscalculated his second shot thus letting Kevin to win. Kevin took home 500 dollars in prize money while Tyler earned only 50. George McLeod, US Open Senior winner placed 5th with total score of 146, Tracy Opper placed 6th with 148 points.

The event was fundraiser for Basics in Milwaukee in conjunction with Timber Lee camps to provide poor urban children with an opportunity to visit summer camp. This year’s event raised 810 dollars which will bring life changing opportunity for 9 children.

Blondie, sounds like you have a personal agenda with Kevin. He is the USA National Champion of both the USPMGA and the PPA. Certainly, he is among the best putters in the game today. We all know that according to the rules in minigolf, golf, putt-putt and badminton there are no 'do-overs' after a game is complete. It matters none who asked for the mulligan. This tournament result is a travesty- manipulated intentionally or not by the tournament director. How will the USPMGA ever gain real credibility with occurances like last weekend's in Wisconsin and leaders such as you defending it?

Irregardless, if there was a disturbance, it should have been brought up before he even completed the hole. I would have a hard time believing that the customers disturbed him for all 5 strokes. It is the player's responsibiity to be aware of his or her surroundings and to step off if they have an issue. The rights for appeal were clearly forfeited according to USPMGA rules. I personally had a ruling that I was not aware of when I played my first Masters. Had I knew about the ruling I would have had several strokes taken away from my score. I spoke to the tournament director after the round telling him I was not aware of that hole's ruling and he said that when I walked off the hole and played the next hole, the scores for the previous hole could NOT be changed. How exactly is this instance of what happened in Prairieville any different?

This is unofficial response as i am currantly on medical leave.
From what i heard- the replay was requested by other player's in Arn's group, not by Arn himself and agreed also with two players from Kevin"s group. How Kevin missed out on that- don't know. Kevin also was making up stories about Arn's score of seven before replay (actually i was told it was 5).The replay was ordered after round was finished due to customers coming in. Tournament director himself saw disturbance.
It does not say much about Kevin's character making up stories about Tournament Director's relationship with Arn- that is very low blow by any standards. Kevin was trying to tweak result his way after the tournament was over by trying to make up other accusations which did not work out so this was the only one left.
And now i will get very nasty:after two rounds Kevin tied for 3rd and 4th place with 8 month pregnant lady, he had sudden death replay after three rounds with the guy who even did not practice for the tournament. May be Kevin should have taken practice little more serious and played better himself.
Meanwhile- all the issues will be addressed with tournament director for next year to make sure it does not repeat.

@ John... Wow, that was a real stretch... even by your standards. Talk about generalizing. I can't believe you just lumped two continents together. Incredible. Those are precisely the type of comments that keeps this from being a serious news site.

Well this was a score made with the Hand of God, it sometimes happens to players of various sports from the Americas. I assume that these results are final, and will not be changed any more.

While I was not there and do not know the exact circumstances of what happened, I did hear basically what occured. The ruling was completely incorrect. If a player was interfered with or distracted by customers on a particular hole during the tournament, the player, by USPMGA rule, must stop and seek a rules official for a ruling before continuing. When the player continued to play the hole, he forfeited his rights to appeal. He or she definately would not be able to complain about the hole after the round was over and go replay the hole at the end of the round. The result was the player having a score of 5 on a hole to a score of 2, and moving from 4th finishing position to 1st. This ruling was unfair to those players who originally would have finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, that then finished 2nd through 4th. It doesn't matter if a player may or may not have been related to the tournament director.

USPMGA President Bob Detwiler asked me to put in this response:
Arn is not related to the director of the tournament. Everything was blown out of control and a lot of sorrow grapes.

It seems there is some controversy with the outcome of this event. Rumor has it that there was a 'mulligan' that allowed a player's score on a hole to be changed from '7' to '2'. I don't have the details yet. Does anybody have more information?
