Last weekend it was time for a comeback in the Swedish Minigolf Calendar, the Swedish Championship individually indoors.
This has been played in the past but with a long break from the calendar and now back with a new shape. Played at the felt courses of the MunktellArena in Eskilstuna the starting field was dominated by players from nearby. The modus was similar to international tournaments with a stroke play and a match play winner. In the match play ladies and gents had one class each, but in the stroke play there was played in age categories.
Even though 140 players started it was only 5 of the top 50 ranked players (all classes) that stood on the starting line.
The stroke play was played over five laps, on Friday and Saturday, and dominating the scene from lap one was Carl-Johan Ryner. With an average of 26.8 he won with a margin of 13 strokes ahead of Mikael Nieminen of Örebro. Third another 3 strokes behind was Robin Andersson of Sundbyberg. These two gentlemen’s on second and third place was also number two and tree on the straight list so Carl-Johan was by far the best player this weekend.
However as so often happen to the overall best player also Carl-Johan lost early on in the match play on Sunday. This time Carl-Johan lost to Lennart Jansson of Örebro in the second match, in spite of acing nine lanes (Lennart aced 11). In the semifinals on the men’s side it was all about senior gentlemen stars. The nestor in Swedish Minigolf, Sven-Olof Ericsson won in a though battle against Stefan Viberg and Mikael Karlsson won against Bernt Gustafsson after starting this match with 8 aces on the ten first lanes.
In the final Sven-Olof and Mikael played a dramatic match where Mikael first took the lead with 3 lanes after 4 played, but Sven-Olof managed to come back to all square. Then Mikael again took a 3 lane grip and looked like the gold medalist with only 3 lanes to go. But with a shake ending from Mikael, Sven-Olof got the chance to win all those 3 last lanes and he managed to do it forcing the match into a sudden death. This was won after four lanes by Mikael, crowning a good season with another medal, this time the gold. The bronze match was won by Bernt Gustafsson.
Amongst the ladies the weekend was all about Karin Olsson and Bernice Thors. These two had first a battle for gold in the stroke play, which Karin managed to win after a dramatic turn around on the last three lanes on the last lap. Then on Sunday the meet again in the match play final. Once again it was a close battle and once again Karin managed to turn the match around and win on the last two lanes after being one lane down with two to go. The bronze was won by Annelie Larsson.
