WMF board and British Minigolf Federation have been discussing the possibility of removing the word “World” from the name of World Crazy Golf Championships. The latest memorandum of WMF board meetings suggest that BMGA might agree to rename the tournament after the 2009 season. WMF tried to get the tournament renamed already for the 2009 season, but the negotiations proved unsuccessful.
World Crazy Golf Championships have been played every year since 2003 in Hastings, Great Britain. The tournament has often included the biggest money prizes in European minigolf, thanks to generous sponsors. World-class celebrities have visited and also participated in the event, which is played in a tongue-in-cheek atmosphere, with special rules in the final round: the balls of many players are on the minigolf lane at the same time, and players can knock the balls of other players to better or worse positions, or even to the hole.
The rules of WMF prohibit arranging “world championship” events without a permission from WMF, and WMF is not interested in sanctioning this kind of a tournament. In the past years WMF has overlooked the naming issue of World Crazy Golf Championships, as the special rules can be interpreted as evidence that it is a different game than minigolf, and therefore not covered by the jurisdiction of WMF. » memorandum of WMF board meeting 27-29 March 2009
